BOCA RATON – Investigators found Anastasio Caceres dead outside a home in Sandalfoot Cove west of Boca Raton on Aug. 6, 2012. Almost 12 years to the day after the fatal stabbing, they arrested the man who allegedly killed him.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's officials booked Peterson Eliantus into the county jail on Aug. 25 on a first-degree murder charge. Investigators said the stabbing stemmed from an argument between the men, both 25 at the time. A witness reported hearing Caceres say, “Hey, bro, did you really stab me, bro?” after he fell to the ground.

Eliantus fled the area after the attack and “was not seen by his family, friends, neighbors or police officers familiar with the area,” said the sheriff's police report, originally filed in October 2012.

Then on August 25, investigators found him on Southeast First Avenue in downtown Fort Lauderdale and arrested him. The arrest report did not provide details on how investigators tracked Eliantus to the crime scene, 20 miles south of where Caceres died.

District Judge Ted Booras denied Eliantus bail during a hearing on Aug. 26 and appointed a public defender to represent him. As a matter of policy, the county public defender's office does not comment on open cases.

An argument turned into a street brawl and then a fatal stabbing

According to court documents, the argument began when Eliantus drove into the neighborhood west of the Florida Turnpike and south of Palmetto Park Road to confront Carceres about a comment someone had made about him.

“I’m just going there to talk to him,” Eliantus is said to have told investigators, according to a confidential witness.

Witnesses said the argument escalated into a fight along Southwest 54th Way, where Caceres had been visiting a friend. At one point, Caceres lunged at Eliantus, who extended his right hand in a stabbing motion, a witness said. Eliantus then drove away from the scene in a friend's silver Lincoln.

A group of friends took Caceres to an unnamed hospital, where he died of stab wounds to the abdomen and chest, according to a 2012 autopsy by the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner.

Cell phone records obtained by the sheriff's office confirmed that Eliantus had called Caceres twice that evening before the fight broke out.
