Trailer for “Megalopolis” withdrawn: Timeline of the film drama by Francis Ford Coppola

  • A trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” was pulled because it used incorrect quotes.
  • Coppola also came under criticism when videos appeared on the Internet showing him kissing extras on set.
  • Coppola financed the science fiction drama himself and the production cost him $120 million.

Francis Ford Coppola’s science fiction drama “Megalopolis” is embroiled in a controversial debate ahead of its release scheduled for September.

The film is set in a dystopian future and revolves around the architect Caesar (Adam Driver) and the mayor of the fictional US city of New Rome, who argue about how to rebuild it after a catastrophe.

Coppola has been trying to realize this passion project since 1983. But the scale and ambition of the film – which is about a high-tech city and the main character controls time – made it difficult for the director to convince the studios to provide the huge budget needed to make the film.

Their reticence might be surprising, considering that Coppola has made some of the best films of all time, including “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now.” But the skepticism might be due in part to the fact that his recent projects, including “Twixt” and “Tetro,” have failed to score big at the box office. Studios might fear that Coppola isn't as in tune with the times as he once was.

Coppola financed the film himself and sold, among other things, his vineyards in Sonoma County, California, for an undisclosed amount in July 2021. Robert Nicholson, a West Coast winery expert, estimated in an interview with the North Bay Business Journal that the sale could have brought in between $500 million and $1 billion.

Vanity Fair reported that the director used this money to make “Megalopolis” for $120 million.

Here is a complete timeline of the drama surrounding Megalopolis.
