250 dead fish found in Dale Hollow Reservoir

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) said it is monitoring Dale Hollow Reservoir after 250 walleye were found dead.

The TWRA said it will specifically monitor high water temperatures, low oxygen levels, reduced flows and changes in water levels. It will specifically monitor the Horse Creek and Mitchell Creek areas.

According to the TWRA, walleyes searching for baitfish can fall victim to low oxygen levels in the water. The incidents are weather-related. The last significant incident occurred in Dale Hollow in 2012 when similar conditions prevailed.

“Currently, walleye are the most affected by the poor conditions. However, if weather and water conditions do not change, other game species may also be affected,” the TWRA said. “In 2012, both game and non-game species were affected, including walleye and smallmouth bass. Anglers may also observe these occurrences in other reservoirs in the area.”

TWRA Fisheries will continue to monitor and manage fish populations in all reservoirs using a variety of data collection methods.
