Dublin High School student is said to have been confronted by his parents and attacked by teenagers

A Dublin High School student was injured in an incident in which he was allegedly confronted by a parent and then attacked by a group of teenagers and young adults, police said.

In a letter to the school community, headteacher Maureen Byrne said the attack took place after school on Friday.

“We are outraged that this happened on our campus. School must be a place where everyone feels safe and supported,” Byrne said.

Dublin Police said in a separate statement on Tuesday afternoon that the 15-year-old male victim was first approached by a parent at the school at around 3:30 p.m. The victim retreated to the boys' changing room, followed by the parent and four unknown individuals.

“One of the guys hits me from behind,” the victim told KPIX. “I get up, start hitting back, and they all start attacking me.”

The four people, aged between 16 and 19, wearing hoodies, attacked the victim until the fight was stopped.

According to the school's principal, football players and a coach helped stop the attack. School administrators, police and medical personnel were called to the scene.

According to police, the victim suffered injuries to his face and head that are not life-threatening. He was treated and released from the hospital a short time later.

The victim's mother told CBS News Bay Area her son has a broken nose and a concussion. She said he will not return to school until the school district can ensure his safety and she is concerned about his future after he was attacked in the Dublin High School locker room.

Police are even more concerned after saying another parent was involved in the attack.

“I just cannot understand how another parent can inflict physical violence on another child and get away with it,” said the victim's parent.

A Dublin High student, a football player who did not want to give his name, said the victim was a teammate. He said the team was preparing for team photos when the attack occurred.

“They just came in. It was so fast, it was like 10 seconds. They just beat him up and then they just ran out,” the student told CBS News Bay Area. “He got pushed into the lockers first and then they all came in. They all beat him and stuff. It was bad.”

He said the victim was lying on the ground bleeding when other team members broke up the fight.

“Some people went in and pushed them out and they ran. I pushed someone down. That was it,” the student continued. “My parents just said, 'How could your school let this happen? Your school is supposed to be a safe environment and they need to improve.'”

The school's principal said police had identified “a number” of people involved in the attack, but did not elaborate. Surveillance videos showed the moments before and after the attack.

Investigators believe the attack was not random. Officials said Tuesday they would continue to interview witnesses and collect video evidence to determine a motive and how the victim, perpetrator and parents knew each other.

In the letter, Byrne thanked public safety partners for their quick response to the incident. “We are working with police to address this to the fullest extent of the law,” she said.

After the attack, the school's principal said that adults would continue to use the locker rooms. The school has also cordoned off the corridors leading to the parking lot.
