Kazan International Airport in Russia has suspended flight traffic due to the threat posed by drones, Russian media reported on August 28.

The Kremlin-affiliated Russian air traffic control agency said restrictions were introduced at 7 a.m. Moscow time to “ensure flight safety.” The planes were diverted to an airfield in Samara.

The Russian Telegram channel Baza claimed that the suspension of flights was due to the threat of drone attacks.

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. In April, Kazan was one of four airports that suspended flights due to the threat of drone attacks. In June, operations were temporarily suspended for “security reasons”.

Kazan is located more than 900 kilometers east of the Ukrainian border in the Russian Republic of Tatarstan, which has previously been the target of Ukrainian drone attacks.

The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces shot down 12 Ukrainian drones overnight in Rostov and Voronezh oblasts, two Russian regions bordering Ukraine. Two oil depots in Rostov oblast caught fire after the suspected attacks.

Details on possible drone attacks in Tatarstan are currently not available.
