More and more voices are calling for Wasim Muhammad, the chairman of the Camden School Board, to resign after a million settlement in a sexual assault case

CAMDEN, New Jersey (WPVI) – The president of the Camden school board faced angry protesters Tuesday night demanding his dismissal.

It was the first meeting since the district reached a $2 million settlement to resolve allegations that board president Wasim Muhammad sexually abused a former student.

During the meeting, community members blew their whistles and chanted “Fed up, be angry.”

Before a settlement was reached on May 14, 2024, a lawsuit alleged that Muhammad sexually abused a student in the 1990s when he was a social studies teacher.

Muhammad has protested his innocence.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy had previously called on Muhammad to resign in light of the allegations.

Katrina T. McCombs, superintendent of the Camden City School District, released the following statement Tuesday amid calls for Muhammad's resignation:

“While we humbly acknowledge the challenge we currently face, the Camden City School District remains committed to a successful start to the 2024-2025 school year. Our top priority is to ensure students, staff and families have the resources they need to succeed. The socioemotional and academic well-being of our students drives our efforts. We are confident that together we can overcome these challenges and create a thriving environment for everyone in our district.”
