New Boeing 757 accident at Delta raises fears again

An accident with a Boeing 757 has reignited fears about the aircraft manufacturer. A tire explosion on a Delta aircraft killed two people and seriously injured a third person at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on the morning of August 27, 2024. Delta Air Lines has released a statement on the incident.

What caused the Boeing 757 accident at Delta?

The Boeing 757 crash was caused by a tire that burst during disassembly in Delta Air Lines' maintenance area, WSB-TV's Channel 2 Action News in Atlanta reported.

A Delta employee and a contractor were killed in the incident. Another Delta employee suffered serious injuries, but his condition is not yet known. The identities of the victims have not been released and further details about the tire explosion have not been released pending the investigation.

The accident occurred at 5 a.m., according to the Daily Mail. The headquarters of Delta TechOps, the maintenance division of Delta Air Lines, is located at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

In a statement, Delta Air Lines said it was “heartbroken by the loss of two team members and the injury of another” and offered “its full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.” The company is cooperating with local authorities and “conducting a full investigation to determine what happened.”

The Boeing 757 arrived in Atlanta on Sunday evening, August 25, from Las Vegas, according to the plane's tail number. The plane made four flights between Tampa, Atlanta and Las Vegas on Sunday. The Federal Aviation Administration is in contact with Delta regarding the accident.

Also on August 27, an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 flight was forced to turn around because “the first engine on the left side of the aircraft had failed,” Fox Business reported. In January, another Delta Air Lines Boeing 757 aircraft lost its nose wheel before takeoff at the same airport, CNN reported. That same month also saw the infamous incident in which a tail door on a Boeing 737 Max 9 operated by Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 fell off.
