On August 15, 2024, the life of 23-year-old talented Czech gymnast Natalie Stichova ended tragically in a devastating accident on the Tegelberg in Bavaria. Known for her love of outdoor adventures, Stichova was visiting the famous Neuschwanstein Castle with her friends when the horrific accident occurred.

The Tegelberg is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and offers breathtaking views of the Bavarian Alps and the surrounding countryside. The mountain, which is over 1,700 meters high, is known for its steep, challenging hiking trails and scenic beauty. At the foot of the mountain lies Neuschwanstein Castle, one of Germany's most famous landmarks. Built in the 19th century, the castle has become a symbol of Sleeping Beauty's fairytale architecture and attracts millions of visitors every year.

Stichova and her companions were hiking and enjoying the picturesque surroundings of the Tegelberg. While attempting to take a selfie on the edge of the mountain to capture the majestic Neuschwanstein Castle in the background, Stichova tragically lost her footing. It's unclear if she slipped or if a piece of the ledge gave way beneath her, but the result was a devastating fall of about 260 feet.

Rescue workers were quickly dispatched to the scene of the accident and Stichova was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, the injuries she sustained were severe. After six days in critical condition, during which she was on life support, her family made the heartbreaking decision to let her go. Stichova died on August 21, 2024.

A cautionary tale

The tragic death of Natalie Stichova has once again drawn attention to the dangers of risky selfies, especially at high altitudes and in dangerous locations. While Tegelberg is a popular tourist destination, it is known for greeting tourists with its rugged terrain and steep cliffs, so caution is more important than technology here. Authorities often advise visitors to stay alert and make safety a top priority, especially in areas where natural beauty can easily distract from inherent risks.

Stichova’s death has left a deep hole in the hearts of her family, friends and the entire gymnastics community in the Czech Republic. Her gymnastics club, Sokol Pribram, expressed its deep sadness in a statement, remembering her as a lively and cheerful person who spread smiles wherever she went. A candlelight vigil was organized in her memory, with those who knew and loved her coming together to mourn and honor her life.

The untimely death of Natalie Stichova is a grim reminder of how important security is in our quest for life's most beautiful moments. While her community mourns, her legacy as a beloved athlete and adventurer remains and is a testament to her passion for life and the outdoors.
