US Open LIVE: Emma Raducanu OUT as Carlos Alcaraz overcomes shock | Tennis | Sport

Tim Henman and Naomi Broady have both picked Alexander Zverev as favorites for the US Open men’s title.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Broady revealed that she had taken an “outlandish step” with her prediction that the German would win his first Grand Slam.

When asked why she does not expect Jannik Sinner to win, she said: “That is a difficult question: Why did you not choose the world number 1 and winner of the Australian Open? [to win it]? I think there was obviously a lot going on off the pitch.

“He may be distracted by that. He has also struggled with injuries and illness this year. I didn't know what shape he would be in when I made my pick and I can't change it, even though he then won in Cincinnati!

“I just feel like the strength in men's tennis is so great now and everything is wide open. This year, more than any other, you feel like potentially someone else, not the big three, could win.

“Zverev, who has won more ATP matches than anyone else this year, is surely the right one?”

Henman said: “I didn't pick Sinner in Cincinnati because of his hip. We were right on the sidelines and he looked really uncomfortable between so many points.

“If you consider that you're going into a Grand Slam tournament where there are only five sets over two weeks, he needs seven wins. I think that's unlikely.

“Then when you add in the fact that he tested positive for an illegal substance and went through the whole process of being cleared, it's going to be a distraction and is a huge talking point in our sport.

“I think Zverev is a bit off the mark as a tip, but I think he will get one at some point.”
