APD responds to man seen with gun who is dead after shooting with police officer

ASHEVILLE – Asheville Police officers responded to multiple calls about a man pointing a rifle at people. He died while barricading himself inside a home on Chatham Road after an officer was involved in a shooting.

On August 27, around 5 p.m., “several individuals” called 911 to report that a man had pointed a gun at them, according to an APD press release shortly after 8 p.m. The same man had attacked a contract worker for the city of Asheville with a shovel.

“Officers arrived shortly thereafter and ordered the man to drop his weapon, but he refused,” the press release said.

“The man pointed his rifle at the officers and a shootout ensued, including officer involvement. The man then retreated to his home on Chatham Road and barricaded himself inside, where he was later found dead.”

According to APD protocol, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

The public is asked to avoid the area of ​​Merrimon Avenue and Chatham Road in North Asheville during the investigation.

At around 6:30 p.m., police spokesman Rick Rice said Chatham Road was closed. APD and the Asheville Fire Department were on the scene.

No information about the man's identity has been released.
