Man sentenced to six years in prison for stabbing woman to death outside Portland apartments

PORTLAND, Oregon (KPTV) – A man was sentenced to 70 months in prison Wednesday for stabbing a woman to death in March 2023.

Steven Knox was sentenced to life in prison for a 1987 murder before being released on parole in 2009. In 2011, his parole was revoked after he was convicted of domestic violence and other charges, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.

At the time of the stabbing in 2023, Knox was on probation.

On March 14, 2023, a victim called police after being stabbed multiple times from behind outside his apartment in the Buckman neighborhood.

One person died in a level two house fire in the Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood early Monday morning.

Video of the incident shows Knox and the victim interacting before walking away. Knox then returns with an object in his hand. He chases the victim, grabs him, and repeatedly makes stabbing motions in his direction.

The victim later stated that he had known Knox for several years, and police concluded that the motive for the stabbing was probably that he was owed money.

On August 21, 2024, a jury found Knox not guilty of attempted murder I, but guilty of assault II and unlawful use of a weapon. At a sentencing hearing on August 27, 2024, Judge Leslie Bottomly sentenced Woodward to 70 months in prison, plus 3 years of probation after his release.
