New details on suspect in fatal car crash in New Castle County

Twelve minutes before the fatal crash on August 21 at around 11:20 p.m. at the corner of Airport and Christiana Road in New Castle, court documents obtained by FOX 29 detail what happened when Delaware State Police stopped 26-year-old Dejuan Robinson for speeding.

Documents show that the officer who responded to the call “suspected criminal activity” due to Robinson's “unusual behavior,” including changing lanes when the officer pulled up behind him in a marked vehicle, and his conduct during the traffic stop.

According to the documents, Robinson called immediately when he was stopped and told the officer that he could not find his driver's license and did not have insurance or registration because it was a rental car. When the officer inspected the vehicle, it turned out that it was not a rental car, the documents say.

When the police officer asked Robinson to get out of his car at around 11:16 p.m., he sped away, according to the documents.

Officers ran back to their vehicles to follow him, but quickly lost sight of him and did not pursue him. According to the documents, police believe the accident occurred less than 3.5 minutes later when Robinson ran a red light, killing the driver of a Dodge Caravan, Karisma Elivo-Stevens, 29, and her eldest daughter, Zamiyah, 10, while injuring her four other children.

According to the documents, Robinson has an extensive criminal history, including current charges of weapons possession and drug trafficking, as well as fleeing and resisting police.

According to the Wilmington Police Department website, Robinson was arrested in June and labeled a “wanted person.” Robinson fled from officers on foot but was eventually arrested with crack cocaine. According to the website, Robinson was released on $1,500 bail.

Law enforcement sources confirm that this is the same Dejuan Robinson who was named as the driver in a two-state chase in January 2019.

Wilmington police said when they tried to stop Robinson, he sped off northbound on I-95 and caused a crash that injured two police officers and a 3-year-old boy. The pursuit ended with another crash at the corner of Broad Street and Oregon Avenue. However, police told FOX 29 that despite subsequent contact with police, Robinson was never charged with the crime.

Robinson is currently being held on bail of just over $906,000 on murder and other charges related to the fatal August 21 car crash. Police say the investigation is ongoing.

FOX 29 has reached out to Robinson's attorney, but according to court documents, he has not yet named an attorney.
