UAlbany police officer released from hospital after car accident

A 12-year veteran of the UAlbany police force has been released from the hospital after being struck by a car on campus early Tuesday morning.

The officer fired his weapon at the fleeing car after being hit. It is believed to be the first time in the department's history that an officer has fired his weapon while on duty, the department said.

The whole thing started around 1 a.m. Police tried to stop a car on Center Drive East on UAlbany's Uptown campus, police said. The vehicle had been thrown off campus earlier in the evening, police said.
The car did not stop and a chase began. It ended near the Albany Medical Center, where four men were pursued on foot and later arrested.

Fortunately, no one else on campus was injured.

The driver of the vehicle, Anthony Taylor, 19, of Albany, was charged with attempted aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, all felonies. He also faces misdemeanors including unlawful flight from a law enforcement officer in a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, reckless driving and traffic violations.

Two other people were charged with misdemeanors. No charges were filed against the fourth person.
All four – who are not students – were barred from entering the campus earlier in the evening because they were allegedly involved in threats and harassment, police said.
