Kiev: Russian attacks on Ukraine claim six lives on second day of heavy attacks

  • According to official reports, six people were killed in Ukraine
  • The attack follows a major strike that began on Monday
  • Selensky calls on allies to provide long-range capabilities
  • Russian bloggers claim the attacks are retaliation for the Kursk invasion

KIEV (Reuters) – Russia has attacked dozens of Ukrainian regions with missiles and drones, killing at least six people, Russian authorities said on Tuesday, in Moscow's biggest airstrike in the war on its neighbouring country.

Three people were killed when a hotel in the central city of Kryvyi Rih was “obliterated” by a rocket, regional officials said. Five people were injured and one person is still missing after the attack, Serhiy Lysak, governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, which includes Kryvyi Rih, said on Telegram.

In addition, three people were killed in drone attacks on the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia.

Three people were also injured in the Zaporizhia region, and four others were injured in a rocket attack on the northeastern Kharkiv region during the night, local authorities said.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday that Ukraine would retaliate against Russia for its attacks, urging allies to consider joint air defense operations and provide long-range capabilities after Russia struck Ukraine's energy infrastructure with more than 200 missiles and drones on Monday.

During the attack on Tuesday, Ukraine shot down five of ten incoming missiles and 60 of 81 drones, the Air Force said.

The Ukrainian Air Force lost sight of ten more drones, which probably crashed somewhere on Ukrainian territory, it was said. Another one ended up on Belarusian territory.

Russia's Defense Ministry told the Interfax news agency that its forces carried out a high-precision weapons strike on Ukraine overnight. Moscow has denied targeting civilians since launching a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, although thousands have been killed.
Several Russian military bloggers said Moscow's attacks were an “act of retaliation” for Ukraine's surprise incursion into Russia's western Kursk region – the first such action since World War II.

In the capital Kiev, the military administration said that air defenses had shot down all targets aimed at the city. There were no injuries and two small fires caused by debris were extinguished by rescue workers, local authorities said.
