Chicopee police arrest suspect after attempted car theft

CHICOPEE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) — A Holyoke man was arrested after an attempted carjacking in Chicopee.

Late Monday night, police were called to a gas station on Chicopee Street for a report of an attempted carjacking. The first officer on the scene was able to locate the people involved and arrested the suspect while other officers investigated the incident.

The suspect, 19-year-old Alexander Vega, had previously been in the store and attempted to start an argument with a man inside the store. Vega then allegedly took some items from the counter and left the store.

Outside, Vega attempted to enter an occupied vehicle. The vehicle's occupants began screaming for help.

Vega now faces several charges, including armed carjacking, assault with a dangerous weapon and disturbing the peace by carrying a dangerous weapon.
