CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A child who was shot in Carolina Beach and later died from his injuries was on vacation at the time, according to a recently released 911 call.

In the call, a man requested an ambulance be dispatched to 305 S. Lake Park Boulevard (Waterview Condos) while a woman could be heard crying in the background.

“Please hurry, I have a small child who was shot,” the caller said. “Please hurry.”

When the emergency call center asked if the shooter was still nearby, the caller said no, saying the shot had been fired accidentally.

The prosecutor's office previously confirmed to WWAY that a weapon was found at the crime scene.

The shooting occurred on August 10. During the phone call, the caller mentioned that they were on vacation and that the child had just turned 5 years old. He also confirmed that the child was unresponsive.

The caller then left the house to open the garage for emergency responders, but refused to go back inside to help render aid. He told the emergency operator, “I can't, there are enough people, we are all police here.”

The caller said he was from New Jersey, but it is unclear whether the entire family was on vacation from there.

In an earlier statement, Carolina Beach police confirmed that the child was taken to Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center and died at the hospital.

Given the new information suggesting that law enforcement officers were present at the home, WWAY reached out to Carolina Beach Police to inquire about the status of the investigation and whether a service weapon was involved in the shooting.

WWAY is awaiting a response and will provide an update with details.
