Universal's Insidious maze doesn't end until the very last, very last, very last scare – Redlands Daily Facts

Just when you think it's safe, the new Insidious maze at Universal's Horror Nights surprises you with a sequence of five final scares – and the terror doesn't stop until the red-faced demon makes you scream one last time.

“At the end we stack them,” said John Murdy, creative director of Halloween Horror Nights. “Just bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.”

The new maze “Insidious: The Further” based on the horror film franchise will be part of Halloween Horror Nights 2024 at Universal Studios Hollywood.

At Halloween Horror Nights 2024, there will be eight new haunted mazes as well as four scare zones and the Terror Tram on select evenings from September 5 to November 3 at Universal Studios Hollywood.

The new Insidious maze focuses on the supernatural thriller “Insidious: The Red Door,” which came out in 2023, and also includes all previous films.

“It's a throwback to the best scary moments in the series,” Murdy said during a tour of the Insidious labyrinth.

The labyrinth begins in the cave of the red-faced demon and leads you from room to room into the afterlife – an underworld between the living and the dead.

Through the maze you pass a baby room, a children's room, a student dormitory, a prison cell and other scenes from the Insidious films.

Red curtains and red doors break up each scene. Every time a red door appears, you're transported to a new movie – with dripping black paint and demonic scratches marring the doors at every turn.

All of the demons from the Insidious series are wreaking havoc in the labyrinth, including the Bride in Black, Parker's Mother, the Man Who Can't Breathe, and the KeyFace Demon.

But it is the red-faced demon that follows you throughout the maze and appears several times.

“He's the main antagonist in this movie, even though we've met all the others,” Murdy said. “He's my favorite. He's the scariest.”

Murdy likes to leave the horror night participants screaming when they leave a haunted labyrinth.

“Sometimes we do a final scare, or maybe even a last-last scare,” Murdy said. “This is a last scare, a last-last scare, a last-last-last scare, a last-last-last-last scare, and a last-last-last-last-last scare.”

Don't let up in the treacherous labyrinth until you've seen all the demons one last time.

“It's five scares in quick succession,” Murdy said. “All the demons from the entire franchise in the right order, and the Red Demon at the end.”

Horror Nights has previously used the Insidious film series to create labyrinths in 2013 (Into the Further), 2015 (Return to the Further) and 2017 (Beyond the Further).

The five films in the supernatural horror series include “Insidious” (2010), “Chapter 2” (2013), “Chapter 3” (2015), “The Last Key” (2018) and “The Red Door” (2023). A sixth installment is scheduled to hit theaters in August 2025.

The $700 million Insidious film series is directed by acclaimed horror filmmaker James Wan, who is also behind the $1 billion Saw series and the $2 billion Conjuring series.

The seven other mazes featured at Halloween Horror Nights 2024 at Universal Studios Hollywood include:

Separate admission to Horror Nights is not included in day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood.
