McIntosh Co. to hold special election to repeal zoning ordinance on Sapelo Island

MCINTOSH COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – McIntosh County is holding a special election to repeal a zoning ordinance on Sapelo Island on October 1st.

If you live in the county, there’s some important deadlines you should know.

According to the McIntosh County Board of Elections, the last day to register to vote for the special election is September 3rd by 5 p.m.

Early voting begins on September 9th and will run through the 27th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Saturday voting on the 14th and 21st.

The deadline to request an absentee ballot is September 20th and Election Day is set for October 1st. All precincts will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Last September, McIntosh County commissioners passed a zoning ordinance that allowed larger homes to be built on Sapelo Island in the Hog Hammock community – one of Coastal Georgia’s last in-tact Gullah Geechee communities.

Island descendants have long feared the impact larger homes would have on their taxes and the culture of the island. This July, descendants and activists collected enough petition signatures to trigger a ballot referendum.

WTOC will continue to follow this process and bring you the latest.
