Accident on I-25 near Alameda in Denver sends car racing into river

An early morning accident on Interstate 25 caused a car to run off the road and end up in the South Platte River, police said.

Just before 6 a.m., Denver Fire Department and Police responded to a two-vehicle crash on southbound I-25, north of Alameda Avenue. Officials said.

A car ended up in the South Platte River and the driver – an unidentified woman – was able to pull herself out of the vehicle. Police saidThe fire department found the woman sitting on her car.

A water rescue team brought the driver to shore and paramedics took her to the hospital with unknown injuries, fire officials said.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation and information about the second driver was not available Tuesday.

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, as of 8 a.m. Tuesday, the right lane of southbound I-25 between US 6 and Colorado 26/Alameda Avenue remained closed for the crash investigation and cleanup.

Motorists reported delays of up to 20 minutes in the area, CDOT officials said.
