Northport police charge man with animal cruelty after finding dead dogs

Police have charged a local man with multiple crimes after six dead dogs were found in a Northport residence earlier this month.

Assistant Police Chief Keith Carpenter said Northport police were called to a residence in the 1700 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard on Aug. 7 for reports of several dead animals.

Carpenter said officers then found six dead dogs in the house and launched an investigation to determine who was responsible.

After three weeks of growing outrage on social media, Carpenter announced on Monday that an arrest had been made in the case.

He said officers executed arrest warrants against 40-year-old Letitus Demond Gay, charging him with three counts of first-degree cruelty to a dog or cat.

Carpenter said Gay was arrested Sunday and taken to the Tuscaloosa County Jail on $7,500 bail.
