  • Seven people involved in the emergency operation are currently under investigation

A neurosurgeon is being investigated for allowing her teenage daughter to drill into a patient's skull during an operation.

The doctor, whose identity was not disclosed, worked at Graz University Hospital in Austria and reportedly walked her 13-year-old daughter through the procedure step by step in January.

She allegedly even had her daughter drill into the skull of 33-year-old Gregor R., who had to undergo emergency surgery after a head injury following an accident in the forest.

Graz public prosecutor Hansjörg Bacher confirmed that both the neurosurgeon and a second doctor were immediately released from the hospital after the incident.

Bacher also confirmed that the two and five other people involved in the emergency operation are now being investigated for serious bodily harm.

He said: “We are currently still waiting for the final report from the criminal investigation department.”

The patient did not learn the truth about the operation until police later released the details. He is reportedly still struggling with the aftereffects of the accident.

His lawyer Peter Freiberger said he wanted to take legal action against all those involved and, if necessary, demand compensation.

Freiberger said: “The operation and the drilling were necessary, there is no question about that for us. But you let a 13-year-old do something like that.”

Freiberger criticized the behavior of the hospital management and pointed out that everyone in the operating room shared responsibility because they had the opportunity to prevent a 13-year-old from participating in the operation.

He said: “There was no contact, no explanation or apology, nothing. This is just undignified.”

The hospital commented: “Contact was not made because the patient joined the criminal proceedings as a private party and is therefore a party to the criminal proceedings.”

“The operation was carried out without complications. Finally, we would like to inform you that we deeply regret the incident and are committed to ensuring that it is fully clarified.”
