Actor Mohanlal has resigned as president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) following widespread criticism and growing pressure over its handling of sexual Harassment allegations within the Malayalam film industry. All members of AMMA Executive Committee have also jointly submitted their resignations.
The resignations follow the findings of the Committee for Judge K. Hemawhich exposed harassment and abuse of women professionals in the Malayalam industry. The report sparked outrage and led to growing calls for action against those involved in the allegations.
A press release from the Executive Committee states that the existing management committee of 'Amma' resigns in the light of their moral responsibilities. “In connection with the allegations of sexual abuse made against some officials of the Management Committee of the 'Amma' organisation in the social, visual and print media following the publication of the Hema Committee report, the existing Management Committee of 'Amma' resigns in the light of moral responsibilities,” it said.
Mohanlal also informed that the new Management Committee will be elected within two months of the AGM. “We hope that 'Amma' gets a new leadership that can renew and strengthen 'Amma'. Thank you all for the criticism and correction,” Mohanlal's statement concludes.

The controversy intensified on Sunday as more reports of harassment emerged, including a resurfaced allegation against actor-politician Mukesh. The revelations have sent shockwaves through the Malayalam film industry, leading to resignations of senior figures and public outcry.
In response to the growing scandal, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan convened a meeting of senior police officials and announced the formation of a seven-member special commission to investigate the atrocities faced by female actresses in the industry.
As a result, director Ranjith and actor Siddique resigned from their leadership positions at a state film academy and AMMA respectively as the industry faces increasing criticism over its handling of these serious allegations.
