A fourth person was stabbed at the Notting Hill Carnival in west London. According to the Metropolitan Police, the number of arrests over the two days is now 249.

The victim of Monday's stabbing suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police added.

By 7pm BST on Monday, officers had made 145 arrests, most of them for firearms or drug offences. These were in addition to the 104 arrests made on Sunday. Sixteen people were arrested for assaulting emergency workers, four for sex offences and one for firearms.

More than a million people were expected to attend Carnival on Monday. The majority of them came to “celebrate,” police said, while a “minority used this as an opportunity to commit crimes, including acts of violence.”

Thousands of officers were deployed to the annual street festival, which police said was “a demanding event with very dense crowds.”

Police also said they seized 41 non-firearms on Monday. One of those arrested was a man wanted for attempted murder in Hackney in July.

On Sunday, three people were also stabbed, with one death “narrowly avoided,” police said. A woman Who was stabbed The condition of her daughter and her child was still critical on Monday morning, police said.

Deputy Police Commissioner Ade Adelekan said the carnival was supposed to be a “day for the family” but was “overshadowed by unacceptable violence”.

“We are tired of saying the same words every year,” he said. “We are tired of telling families that their loved ones are seriously injured or worse. We are tired of seeing crime scenes at the carnival.”

At the previous two carnival events, one person was killed, 14 others were stabbed and over 125 police officers were attacked.

During these two years, there were about 500 arrests at the carnival.

Measures have been taken to curb crime and violence, including the implementation of an order giving officers expanded powers of stop and search, and another allowing police to order the removal of face coverings and arrest people who do not comply with the order.

The Met said it had worked with organizers for months to ensure the safety of the event.

The police have also worked with the aid organization Safer Spaces to set up zones that offer women and girls a safe place, as groping and sexual assault often occur in dense crowds.
