Skydiver with more than 600 jumps dies near Goondiwindi after failed landing

A 25-year-old man has died in a skydiving accident on the southern border of Queensland.

Emergency services were called to a rural area near Tarawera, near Goondiwindi, at around 8am on Tuesday.

The Australian Parachute Federation (APF), which is investigating the death, said the man, from Scarborough, north of Brisbane, was an experienced skydiver.

“[He had] has successfully landed more than 600 jumps since the adventure sport began in 2022,” the association said.

The APF said the man was attempting a group jump at an organised event for experienced skydivers.

The company believed that the man's parachute had opened and was functioning normally, but that he had suffered an unfortunate landing and sustained numerous serious injuries.

Four other parachutists landed safely.

The APF said the man was given first aid but could not be saved.

APF chief executive Stephen Porter said the man, whose identity has not yet been released by police, grew up in the skydiving community.

“Our thoughts are with the young man's family, who have been part of the skydiving community for many years, and we extend our condolences at this sad time,” Porter said.

Mr Porter said an AFP safety officer was en route to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the incident and improve safety measures in the future.

The Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit is also investigating.
